PARIS, KENTUCKY – A city police officer shot a Florida man early Saturday during an arrest for driving under the influence, the Kentucky State Police said.
State Police said Brian Cornett, a police officer in Paris, was administering a breath test on Joe Anthony Martinez of Frostproof, Fla., when a physical altercation ensued.
Martinez, 19, tried to grab Cornett’s gun from his holster, but Cornett was able to keep his weapon during the struggle and fired one round, striking Martinez in the face, State Police said in a news release.
Martinez was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he remains in serious condition. Cornett was not injured.
State Police are investigating the incident.
