Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explos... Description |
|
The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) enforces federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol and tobacco diversion, firearms, explosives, and arson. With an annual budget of about $1 billion, the ATF also provides technical expertise, training, and resources to other federal and local law enforcement agencies in its mission to reduce violent crime and prevent terrorism. In 2003 the Bureau was split along functional lines; tax collection operations remained within the Treasury Department under the TTB while the law enforcement duties shifted to Department of Justice under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (still known as the ATF).
