James J. Rowley Training Center (JJRTC)
Secret Service Training Academy
National Agency Training Facility
9200 Powder Mill Road,
Laurel, MD 20708
The US Secret Service personnel receive basic training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). More advanced training is conducted at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel MD. Both the Secret Service uniformed branch [which guards the White House] and the special agents who accompany the President and other VIPs train at the Rowley facility. Training activities include driving, weapons and tactics, close protection drills, and water safety. The Water Safety Program courses include basic water survival, rescue swimming, diving, aircraft safety and evacuation, helicopter emergency egress, emergency medicine, and river rescue for specialized security personnel. The Center also offers VIP security training for law enforcement agencies that need this capability.
Portions of this facility are visible from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. One long low building seems to have large triangular skylights, and a bunker like entrance -- it appears to be an indoor target practice range. Also visible is a Disneyland-like artificial village [realistic looking though somewhat garishly painted buildings on two sides of a "street" -- though the "buildings" have width [the "street" is a couple of hundred feet long] and height [the "buildings" are two stories tall] but no depth [the "buildings" are only about 5-10 feet deep]. The entire facility is about 1 km EW and .5 km NS. Apart from the previously mentioned buildings, as well as the access building on Powder Mill Rd, the whole thing is well hidden by pretty deep forest. The central portion of the facility is dominated by a 100m x 400m asphalt runway, with wide aprons and grass overrun areas. The eastern third of the facility is dominated by a driving course, with just about every type of curve, intersection, cross street, and circle imaginable. There is also a main building, approximately the same size as the primary adminstration building at the western end of the facility, along with five other much smaller buildings, and a high tower of some description.
