The DOJ's mission is to enforce the law and defend the interests of the the United States; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in crime prevention and control; to seek punishment for law breakers; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. Under the direction of the US Attorney General, the DOJ is one of the 15 Federal Executive Departments. The DOJ consists of 40 separate component organizations, including the FBI, ATF, US Marshals, BOP, CRS, and US Attorneys. The DOJ has an annual budget in excess of $20 billion.
