Showtime Networks operates several pay-TV networks, including Showtime, The Movie Channel, and FLIX. It jointly operates the Sundance Channel (a premium channel featuring independent fare) with Robert Redford and NBC Universal. The Showtime channel shows original series (The L Word, Weeds), as well as original and theatrical movies. Both The Movie Channel and FLIX concentrate on theatrical movie releases. The company also offers certain programming (boxing matches, concerts) to viewers on a pay-per-view basis. CBS (as Viacom) created Showtime in 1976 for a Northern California cable system; the network went national via satellite in 1978.
