In constructing the new corporate headquarters for AMD, DPR set a standard of quality that will stand the test of time for years to come. DPR scored several successes in its fast-track schedule, ranging from detailed structural upgrade to an award-winning recycling program.
After stripping the existing building down to just the steel framework, DPR carried out extensive seismic and structural upgrade work, including more than one mile of welds on additional steel braces.
While the steel work was still underway, DPRs drywall team prefabricated a complicated ceiling support system for the main rotunda. Then, when the building was enclosed, it installed the entire ceiling in two weeks rather than two months.
A vaulted roof was added to the entire building and, in a space-saving move, all mechanical systems were positioned under the roof. The structure utilized a window-wall and aluminum exterior, and extensive use of clerestory roofs and skylights to brighten the interior.
Exotic long-lead items, marble from Italy, fabrics from Belgium and mahogany from Africa, presented more challenges but were all received and installed on schedule.
The city of Sunnyvale later awarded DPR first prize for its innovative recycling effort, including crushing the concrete exterior panels on the old buildings exterior into base rock for the AMD parking lot.
