Blue Sky Studios Description

Blue Sky Studios, History, Computer Graphic Animation, Dr, Seuss and latest News Developments

Academy Award winning Blue Sky Studios became a wholly owned unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment in 1997 (a subsidiary of News Corporation). The studio was founded ten years earlier with a mission to pioneer creatively superior photo-realistic, high-resolution, computer-generated character animation for the feature film, television and entertainment industries.

Throughout our history, we at Blue Sky Studios have maintained a single-minded focus on creating high quality imagery, while upholding the highest production standards. Not only do we boast some of the industry’s most creative animation talent, its proprietary software, CGI Studio, is considered the best renderer in the business.

CGI Studio is based on the concept of raytracing and simulates the way light behaves on objects and surfaces in a natural environment. The software incorporates an object-oriented graphics programming language rather than a closed menu-driven package. It also builds images through the use of the most advanced geometric models available, giving it a significant advantage over rendering systems built around polygons. Because of CGI Studio’s capabilities, we’re famous for integrating live-action and computer-generated animation, composited during the final rendering stage into seamless first generation images.

Some of our credits include the 1998 Oscar Award winning short film Bunny, which was the first film to use an advanced ambient lighting technology known as radiosity, and set new standards in cinematic storytelling for the computer-animation industry. The film has won more than 25 international awards for animation excellence.

Next came our all-CGI feature, Ice Age. The film, directed by Academy Award-winner Chris Wedge, made a record breaking debut in the domestic marketplace with its release on March 15, 2002. Ice Age continues its extraordinary momentum in the international markets around the world.

The studio has also completed work for Fight Club (1999, Fox 2000), several alien creatures for Star Trek: Insurrection (1998, Paramount), the monsters of Alien Resurrection (1997, 20th Century Fox), numerous characters and special effects for A Simple Wish (1997, Bubble Factory/Universal Pictures), the final ?Genesis? sequence in Titan A.E., and a host of dancing, singing cockroaches for the MTV cult classic Joe’s Apartment (1996, Geffen Films, Warner Bros.). The studio has also animated numerous commercials and created an instant hit with the “talking fish” animation for the 1999 season finale of HBO’s The Sopranos.

Message from the Owner of Blue Sky Studios

Blue Sky Studios, History, Computer Graphic Animation, Dr, Seuss and latest News Developments

Dr. Seuss mesmerized generations (and continues to do so) of children with numerous books filled with his unique drawings and memorable rhymes. Horton Hears a Who!, one of his most popular titles, tells the tale of the well-known elephant and his ability to hear the tiny and therefore unseen Whos. The lovable Horton who reminds us all,That a person is a person, no matter how small, will soon be released as a vinyl art toy from Super Rad Toys.

The 10 rotocast vinyl figure features an inquisitive Horton eyeing the tiny world of Whoville (situated on a ?speck? atop a pink flower). In addition to the White Classic Book edition pictured here, Horton will also drop in Orange, Classic Gray and a Blue, Night, edition. Logo versions of a few colorways will be available as well. Looking further out, look for several artist editions from Jeremyville, Joe Ledbetter, Mike DeFeo (Blue Sky Studios), Tragnark and more. Horton will drop around the time the childrens book hits the big-screen on March 14th 2008 as a CG animation film from 20th Century Fox / Blue Sky Studios.

Blue Sky Animation Studio

Blue Sky Studios is a CGI-animation studio which specializes in photo-realistic, high-resolution, computer-generated character animation and rendering. In addition to their feature-length animated films, including Ice Age (2002), Robots (2005), and Dr. Seuss?s Horton Hears a Who! (2008), Blue Sky has worked on many high-profile movies, primarily in the integration of live-action with computer-generated animation.

History of Blue Sky Studios

Blue Sky was founded in February, 1987 by a number of artists and technicians who had previously worked on the Disney film Tron while employed at MAGI/Synthavision. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, the studio concentrated on the production of television commercials and visual effects for film. Some of the more memorable commercials that Blue Sky worked on during this time period were a Chock Full O? Nuts spot with a talking coffee bean, and a series of station identities for Nickelodeon that featured the channel?s mascot, Nick Boy, realized as human-shaped orange goo. Using their proprietary animation pipeline, the studio produced over 200 spots for clients such as Chrysler, M&M/Mars, General Foods, Texaco, and the United States Marines.

After their acquisition by 20th Century Fox in 1997, Blue Sky was merged with Los Angeles-based VFX house, VIFX. Eventually, VIFX was shuttered, and Blue Sky was re-purposed to focus solely on animated features.
