Humanitarian Assistance
The British Government is the second largest bilateral donor in fighting hunger in Zimbabwe.
We have contributed £51 million since September 2001 in helping to address the current humanitarian crisis. In addition we have provided £10.4 million through the EC.
We are working through the World Food Programme, which is helping to feed 4 million Zimbabweans.
In addition we are providing a meal a day to nearly 1.5 million people, mostly children, pregnant and nursing women and the elderly, through bilaterally funded NGO feeding programmes.
All our support is strictly apolitical, targeted at those most in need.
HIV/AIDS
We are contributing £26 million over 5 years to help tackle HIV/AIDs in Zimbabwe, working with respected NGOs such as Population Services International.
We are providing contraceptives and other commodities through public health clinics and have helped with drugs supplies.
We are working with NGOs to provide voluntary counselling and testing and to develop home based care.
Small Grants for Community Based Development
We are supporting community based projects across Zimbabwe, through the Small Grants Scheme. Over the last year we have supported almost 40 projects nationwide, worth £140,000.
We work in partnership with local communities to meet the development challenges that they identify – bringing electricity to rural clinics, refurbishing school classrooms and supporting income generating projects in underprivileged communities.
Human Rights
The British Government is committed to the promotion and protection of human rights world wide. Since 1998 we have supported human rights projects in over 90 countries world wide, including in Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe we focus on providing support for victims of political violence, regardless of political affiliation, and capacity building for legal and other practitioners working in this field.
Chevening Scholarships
Since Independence we have supported over 130 Zimbabwean students in pursuing postgraduate studies in the UK, through the Chevening Scholarship programme.
Chevening enables talented young professionals from over 150 countries worldwide to pursue their studies in the UK, before returning home to apply their skills and experience.
We continue to send 10 Zimbabweans on Chevening scholarships every year to study subjects ranging from business administration to journalism, law to enviromental engineering, human rights to nutrition.
