MIT Media Lab Description
A NEW GENERATION OF ARTIFICIAL MECHANICAL LIMBS ... ones that nearly replicate funtioning human body parts. The Lab is a life-changing facility at MIT that provides a unique environment for exploring basic research and applications at the intersection of computation and the arts. Research at The Lab comprises interconnected developments in an unusual range of disciplines, such as software agents; machine understanding; how children learn; human and machine vision; audition; speech interfaces; wearable computers; affective computing; advanced interface design; tangible media; object-oriented video; interactive cinema; digital expression—from text, to graphics, to sound; and new approaches to spatial imaging, nanomedia, and nanoscale sensing. One pioneering area at the Lab is in Biomechatronics—an applied interdisciplinary science that aims to integrate mechanical elements in the human body, both for therapeutic uses (e.g. artificial hearts) and for the augmentation of existing abilities. Primary applications include technologies developed for the military. Biomechatronics comprises aspects of biology, mechanics, and electronics.
