Port of Hanko Description
The Port of Hanko began to develop with constructing the railway to Helsinki area in 1873. It was and still is a unique nonfreezing port in all Finland. The city of Hanko was founded a year later - in 1874.
Hanko is all about the the port. It was the last place the immigrants saw when leaving Finland in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The most Finnish immigrants moving to the United States left their home country in the port of Hanko.
