One of my favorite places in the world...
SoHo (South of HOuston) (pronounced How-ston) is the neighborhood that defied Robert Moses. Mr. Moses wanted to raze the beautiful cast iron buildings to make a less beautiful highway between Queens and mid-town, but the residents rebelled and now those buildings are among the most desirable homes in the city. Hence, they're among the most expensive, too.
SoHo began its transformation from being Manhattan's industrial center to the artist's Mecca in the 70s, and now it's so popular that the artists can't afford it. SoHo is lower-density than the Village, and many of the best buildings are co-ops or condos, making finding a rental a challenge. There are walk ups and some newer construction buildings for rent.
SoHo Description
The SoHo that surrounds you, with its cast-iron warehouses and cobblestone streets arose in the 1850's after the residential population moved uptown. Ornate edifices housing fabrics, china, glass became ideal for displays and became perfect for the art galleries to come.
By the late 1900's, the fashionable businesses moved uptown and the area developed into a seedy, sweatshop-filled slum known as "hell's hundred acres."
Restructured labor laws forced the sweatshops to evacuate leaving SoHo a ghost town ripe for a budding revolution!
Through the 1960's artists quietly moved into the abandoned buildings which provided "lofty" spaces to contain their creativity.
But by the 1970's SoHo developed into a community, transforming itself into a interchangeable residential / commercial / artistic zone.
