About Us

The Springfield Museums, located in the heart of downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, is comprised of four world-class museums – the Museum of Fine Arts, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum, and the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum. The Museums Association is proud to be home to the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden, a series of full-scale bronze sculptures of Dr. Seuss’s whimsical creations, honoring the birthplace of Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss. For one admission price, you can enjoy all four Springfield Museums and the Dr. Seuss Park. Each Museum is different and there is plenty to see, experience, and appreciate all in one day! Along with our permanent collections and galleries, we host major traveling art, history and science exhibitions. You’ll always find something new!

A Few Interesting Facts

• The Springfield Science Museum is home to the Seymour Planetarium, the oldest operating planetarium in the United States. The star ball in the Seymour Planetarium can project more than 7,000 stars which vary in brightness and actually twinkle. The effect is so accurate and realistic that the planetarium was used to train pilots from Westover Air Base in celestial navigation during World War II.
• The glass disk for the main mirror in the Springfield Science Museum’s telescope was made in 1935 from the same melt of Pyrex glass that was used to make the 200-inch glass disk for the Mount Palomar Observatory in California.
• The ashes of George Walter Vincent Smith and his wife, Belle Townsley Smith, are interred inside one of the walls on the second floor of the Museum that bears his name.
• The stained glass windows in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum were made by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company of New York.
• The Museum of Fine Arts is home to the largest permanent collection of Currier & Ives prints on view anywhere in the world.
• The Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden is the only one in existence honoring Theodor Geisel in life-size bronze.
