Terminal Tower Description
1,400 buildings on 35 acres were razed to make way for the Cleveland Union Terminal project whose tower was originally designed as a 14-storey structure with a 5-storey cupola.
-
The Terminal Tower was "topped off" on August 18, 1927.
-
Second-tallest building in the world when completed in 1930.
-
The Terminal Tower is built on "air rights" over railroad tracks.
-
The steel-reinforced concrete supports for the Terminal Tower reach bedrock approximately 250 feet below ground level.
-
Tallest building in North America outside New York until surpassed by Boston's Prudential Tower in 1964.
-
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 as part of the Union Terminal Group.
-
The Terminal Tower has a 63 foot flagpole at its top, which brings the total tip height of the building to 771 feet.
