Description |

The Toronto Transit Commission, also know as the TTC, is the third most heavily used mass transit system in North America, only behind those of New York City, and Mexico City. Ridership exceeds 2 300 000 every day, on the systems buses, streetcars, rapid transit lines and subways. Having gone through many name changes, Toronto's mass transit system started in 1861 with privately owned Horsecar
lines being taken through the city. These were made electric in 1891, and the TTC still uses many of these same lines. Bus service came in 1921, further extending the mass transit within the city. The Yonge-University-Spadina line was the first subway line to open in the city, in 1954. Numerous subway lines have been added since, and many more are being proposed to serve the still booming city. A rapid transit line-essentialliy an above ground subway line, was added to provide service to Scarborough in 1985.
With many proposed extensions being planned, the TTC is looking to the address Toronto's transportation issues of the future.
