The University of Wisconsin is a public research University with the primary campus located in Madison, Wisconsin.

In achievement and prestige, the University of Wisconsin has long been recognized as one of America’s great universities. A public, land-grant institution, UW offers a complete spectrum of liberal arts studies, professional programs and student activities. Many of its programs are hailed as world leaders in instruction, research and public service. Frequently hailed as a "public Ivy," US News and World Report ranked UW the nation's seventh best public university in 2006.

Founded in 1848, it is the largest University in the state with a total enrollment of over 41,000 students, of whom approximately 29,000 are undergraduates.

Wisconsin has recently held the distinction of being rated the nation's number one "party school", according to the 2005 Princeton Review's annual survey and the May 2006 issue of Playboy magazine. This year's Princeton Review's survey, Wisconsin dropped to fourth place, but took the crown for the most beer.

The "work hard, play hard" mentality of Wisconsin's student body is clearly displayed by the combination of the aforementioned academic and social life rankings.
