What is wisdom?
James said in chapter one, verse five (NIV) , “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
What exactly is wisdom? Most people in the Christian community define it as the written Word of God. To be more accurate, though, it could be the written Word of God or a word we hear God speak to our spirits.
I have received wisdom from the Bible. The wisdom to not be involved with angry people. The wisdom to tithe the money I receive.
However I have also received wisdom by listening to God speak to my spirit. He has told me where to locate a lost article , how to proceed with a difficult problem and many more gems of wisdom.
The world’s wisdom comes from common sense and from book learning. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
However God’s ways are higher than man’s ways. His thoughts are higher than man’s thoughts (Isaiah 55:9).
He sees and knows all. He sees down the road. We don’t. He sees the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11), and He knows how to accomplish them. Again we don’t.
If we tap into God’s wisdom, which as Believers, we have access to twenty-four/seven, then we will be that far ahead of the game.
We can lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) and stay stuck. We can wonder why we aren’t inheriting the promises since we are in Christ. It is because we have not tapped into the wisdom of God within us. God says that we must ask Him for wisdom if we lack it, and He is more than happy to help us without reprimanding us.
Have you ever had to ask someone for help, and they lectured you? Did you wonder if their help was worth being condemned? Has anyone ever made you feel bad for asking for help?
God doesn’t. He loves it when we ask Him for help.
Proverbs 3:4-5 tells us to acknowledge God in all our ways, and He will direct our steps.
God loves us and wants to help us so much. He is interested in every thing in our lives, every detail, big or small. He is interested in every area of our lives. Now can we say the same about Buddha? Allah? Mohammed? No, no and no!
God is thrilled when we ask for wisdom. Remember Solomon? David’s son? King of Israel after his Dad? One night God came to Solomon in a dream and asked Solomon what He could give him (I Kings 3:5). What did Solomon ask for? You guess it! Wisdom (I Kings 3:9).
God not only gave Solomon wisdom but riches as well (I Kings 3:11).. Solomon became the richest man who ever lived (I Kings 3:13)? Why? Because he wanted the wisdom to rule God’s people fairly.
In the book of Proverbs, it tells us that wisdom has riches and honor in one hand and long life in the other (Proverbs 3:16). Wisdom produces everything you need—wealth, health, honor, long life. Wisdom is worth a whole lot more than rubies (Proverbs 3:15).. A thief can steal our jewelry, but he can’t take God’s wisdom from us. We can start over if we have wisdom.
Two women came before Solomon with a baby. Each mother claimed the baby belonged to her. Solomon ordered that the baby be cut in half. He knew the one who protested and told the other woman to take the baby must be the real mother (I Kings 3:16-27).
Discernment, being able to figure out who is telling the truth and who isn’t, comes from wisdom. So does understanding. I call understanding the ability to get it.
I’ve tried to explain the truths of the Bible to one particular man. No matter how hard I try, or how many different ways I put it, this man doesn’t get that God provided him with forgiveness of sins, healing, deliverance, protection, abundance and so much more. He insists on twiddling his thumbs, waiting for heaven. He believes that we are to live the miserable life instead of the abundant one that Jesus died to provide for us.
Wisdom is more than reading a promise or hearing from God. It is understanding what God is saying and knowing how to apply it to our every day lives. Most of the time we know the Bible. We hear a wonderful word when God speaks to our spirits, but we have no idea how to apply it to our lives. In which case, we need to take James’ advice. We need to ask God for wisdom.
When we do, God will grant it. We have His guarantee on it. Even if we have sinned, even if we have made a mistake, God will still give it to us because He says He will not rebuke us. Isn’t that wonderful?
Many times wisdom comes from studying the Word, listening to preachers and hearing God Himself, but it also comes from experience, research and knowledge.
For example: let’s say that our car is having trouble starting. From experience, we know that if we wait a few minutes, it will run fine. So we that’s what we do.
We want to know if this a problem is unique to this particular car or if it is occurring in all of these types of cars. We hop on the Internet and discover that our car is being recalled. Now we have the wisdom necessary to get the car fixed. Whether we act on it or not is up to us.
Wisdom is a valuable commodity. It can bring us health, wealth, long life, godly relationships and so many other things, but it will also give us the confidence we need to handle everyday situations.
We have access to the greatest Source of wisdom twenty-four/seven, the Holy Spirit, and the only membership requirement is that we accept Christ.
Once we are Born-again, the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, and He is the greatest Teacher we can have. He can teach us anything we need to know (John 14:26). He can bring us into all truth (John 16:13)about a subject. He can bring things we have previously learned to our remembrance (John 14:26). He is greatest Source of wisdom we will ever have because He knows all.
