Arkansas City Description |
|
Arkansas City Airport aka Strother Field is jointly owned by Arkansas City, Kansas and Winfield, Winfield, Kansas. The airport was built in 1942. Before the airport was completed the Air Force indicated a need for the use of the airport. Strother Field became a military airport to start with. In December of 1942 the first class of cadets arrived for training in the BT-13. The airport received its name as a memorial to Captain Donald Root Strother, he was a Winfield native and the first Army Air Force pilot from Cowley County, Kansas to lose his life in World War II on the Island of Java( February, 13, 1942). In 1945 the military deactivated the airport and relinquished the airport back to the cities.
