Message from the Owner of Douglas Municipal
In 1930 the City of Charlotte recieved a $200,000 grant to establish Charlotte's first municipal airport. In 1936 the airport officially opened and was called Charlotte Municipal Airport. Eastern Airlines began its first regular scheduled passenger service in 1937. In 1941 the U.S. Air Force took control of the airport and established Morris Field Air Base. In 1950 Eastern Airlines came to the airport. In 1954 the name was changed to Douglas International Airport in honor of gormer Charlotte Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. Delta began service in 1956. By 1962 United, Southern and Piedmont had operations here. During the 1960's there was non stop construction with more terminals, runway extensions and more. During the late 1980's growth was so tremendous passenger and cargo traffic nearly doubled. With all the growth and non stop construction this airport has turned into a major hub, by 1978 International flight was introduced. This airport is one of the few to be able to handle any size airplane and any possible situation. They are already planning for 2020 and beyond.

Douglas International Is located in the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. The airport is public and owned and operated by the City of Charlotte. The airport has three runways of various lenghts with the largest being over 10,000 feet. The airport is a major domestic and international air hub for U.S. Airways. With 5 concourses, 77 national and 18 international gates it is considered a large airport. U.S. Airways is so large here they use all of concourse "B", "C", "E" and part of "D" the international concourse. Douglas is one of the few airports that sees on a regular basis all the planes in the Airbus fleet.
