MARQUETTE, MI – While first quarter 2006 represented significant increases in passengers using the airport, Sawyer’s second quarter reveals an even greater surge in that pattern – reflecting a total of 33,907 passengers (a gain of nearly 18% compared to the second quarter of 2005).
Despite a slight decline in Midwest Connect / Skyway Airlines numbers, a 2006 mid-year review indicates a total of 63,403 passengers used the airport, a considerable increase of 14.30% or 7,965 passengers over the first six months of 2005.
And, due to increased community and regional support of the airport, Sawyer set yet another “first†or notable achievement for total “monthly†usage; recording 11,000+ passengers for March, May and June respectively.
With the return and continuation of air service to Minneapolis - St. Paul, non-stop jet service to Chicago, outstanding airfares to many business and leisure destinations, and a stable flight schedule going into the summer travel season, airport officials project that Sawyer is on track to easily surpass 2005’s record of 115,543 passengers.
American Eagle Airlines recorded significant increases each month this year over the first six months of 2005. American Eagle’s outbound passenger traffic totaled 7,638, and for inbound passengers 7,559, reflecting increases of nearly 35% and 40% respectively.
Northwest Airlines’ Regional Affiliate / Mesaba Airlines recorded 20,180 outbound and 19,618 inbound passengers reflecting increases on average of 15%.
Sawyer International Airport, the Upper Peninsula’s number one airport for passenger airline service, provides (on average) 11 daily departures to Detroit and Minneapolis – St.Paul on Northwest Airlink / Mesaba Airlines; Milwaukee on Midwest Connect / Skyway Airlines; and, jet service to Madison, Green Bay and Chicago on American Eagle Airlines.
