Wemindji

WemindjiWemindji Airport, (IATA: YNC, ICAO: CYNC), is located near the town of Wemindji, Quebec, Canada. Wemindji Airport, Quebec.  The Wemindji Airport is operated by the Conseil de Bande de Wemindji. The airport has been designated a Remote airport under the National Airports Policy. The Wemindji Airport is the community's only reliable year round means of transportation. Facilities and Services The Wemindji Airport has a total land area of 68 ha and includes the following facilities: air terminal building of 141 m2 built in 1987 one runway (3510' X 100') gravel maintenance garage of 424 m2 scheduled flights charter operations) Our local elders recall stories from many years ago that speak of a white mans grave on one of the islands just outside Wemindji. It is believed to be connected to Henry Hudson, an Englishmen and accomplished explorer, who in 1610 sailed into James Bay searching for a new trade route. His ship 'Discovery" spent the winter of 1611 marooned in the ice. In the spring, the crew mutinied and set Henry Hudson and his small loyal group a drift near the islands off Wemindji, never to be heard from again."

Getting there is best by seaplane But Wemindji is also accessible by a permanent class 2 gravel road, which opened in September 1995. With a population of 1,100 Wemindji is one of nine Cree communities located in remote northern Quebec.

"Wemindji is a Cree name meaning painted hills. Our ancestors used the colored earth that grows in the rock surfaces as paint or color dye. The color was used on snowshoes, moccasins and clothing from the hides of moose, caribou, and sealskin. Wemindji is a community located at the mouth of the Maquatua River along the east coast of James Bay in Northern Quebec, Canada.
