Canvey Island Description |
|
Canvey Island is full of history going back past Roman times.And can be traced back to Anglo Saxons,and carries the meaning'the Island of Cana's People'Originally the island was made up of five separate islands,maps exist to show this.It was used to pasture sheep. In 1592 some 4000 sheep were on the Island and In roman times the salt making industry thrived.
Canvey eSTABLISHES A PARISH IN 1881.The dutch workers came to canvey to build a seawall in 1618 two of the original Dutch cottage can still be seen today on 1618 now a musium and another 1621.In the 17th and the late 19th centuries no less than four churches stood on the site of St Katherines(Now a Heratage centre)The viaalge school was built in 1874 opposite the church with REv Hayes being the first minister.In 1889 the 312 ft Well was drilled to supply water to the residence.More up to date the great floods of 1953 where 59 residence lost there lives.There is much to tell about out Island Log in to view our Historical Photos and News.
