Chelmsford Description |
|
Chelmsford is the capital of Essex and has lots of attractions.
Hylands House was built in 1728 and is a grade 2 listed building it is set in 570 acres of heritage parkland containing ancient woodland, ponds, pleasure gardens and a lake. The park has a wide variety of wildlife like Foxes, Squirrels, Deer and Badgers. There are lots of Birds also like Heron, Skylarks, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers, Song Thrushes and lots more.
Hylands park hosts the V Festival each year which is a concert. Past acts performing have been Robbie Williams, Kylie, James Brown, Oasis, Coldplay, Lily Allen, Pink, Joss Stone, Greenday, Paul Weller, Rhianna, Amy Winehouse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Scissor Sisters, Blur, Travis, Texas, Dido, Keane, Girls Aloud, Stereophonics, Sugababes, Jamelia, Nelly Furtado, The Prodigy and much more.
Chelmsford Cathedral was built in the late 15th to early 16th century. It has an Altar, 19th century stained-glass windows, 2 organs, bronze ambos and work by contemporary artists, depicting suffering in the world today. Its had bell ringers since the 17th century and now has 13 bells and a large number of bell ringers who ring for sunday services.
Pleshey Castle is a Norman castle dating from the 12th century.
Leez Priory is an ancient monument with a 13th century priory ruin. Its a redbrick Tudor mansion and tower which has 40 acres of parkland, lakes, walled gardens, Tudor tunnels and a great hall.
Chelmsford Museum is set in a Victorian mansion where you can learn about Chelmsford from the ice ages, the Roman times up to present day.
Marsh Farm Country Park which as at nearby South Woodham Ferrers is a working farm with Sheep, Pigs, Cows, Goats, Chickens, Ponies and a Pets corner. There are walk-in paddocks and many demonstrations a petting barn and tractor rides.
Tropical wings butterfly and birds gardens is at nearby South Woodham Ferrers has free-flying exoctic Butterflies and Birds. It also has a Reptile and Bughouse, Koi ponds, Marmosets, Parrots, Owls, and a childrens play area.
Old Court Theatre stage productions by the Chelmsford Theatre Workshop.
There is also the Essex Police Museum, Sandford Mill Museum, The Essex Regiment Museum and the home to Essex county council, the County Records Office and Essex County Cricket Ground.
