Claremont is a city in
eastern Los Angeles County,
California,
USA, about 30
miles (45 km) east of
downtown Los
Angeles at the
base of the
San Gabriel Mountains. Claremont is known for its
seven higher-education institutions, its tree-lined streets, and historic buildings.[1] Claremont is a small, upper middle to upper
class, well educated community largely populated by professionals and their families.
Due to the number of doctors and professors who
live in Claremont, the number of post-graduate degrees
per capita is unusually high. As such, it is known as \"
The City of Trees and
PhD\'s.\"[2] Claremont is primarily residential, with
commercial activity centered around
The Village (as it is known to most residents), a
popular collection of street-front small
stores, boutiques, offices, and restaurants
westerly adjacent to The Claremont Colleges. The Village
hopes to see even more business with the 2007 completion of a multi-use development including a
cinema, a
luxury hotel,
retail space, offices, and parking structure on the site of an old
citrus packing plant
just west of Indian
Hill Blvd. Several automobile dealerships are located
south of the
San Bernardino Freeway.
