Description |

Dearborn is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in the Detroit metropolitan area and Wayne County, and is the tenth largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 97,775. The city is the hometown of Henry Ford and the world headquarters of the Ford Motor Company. It has a campus of the University of Michigan as well as Henry Ford Community College. Dearborn is the home of Michigan's leading tourist attraction, The Henry Ford (also known as the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village), the nation's largest indoor-outdoor American history museum and entertainment complex. Notable buildings in the city include the Hyatt Regency Dearborn located across from Fairlane Town Center mall. Its origins as a city trace back to a January 1929 consolidation vote that established its present-day borders by merging Dearborn and neighboring Fordson (previously known as Springwells), which feared being absorbed into Detroit. The area between the two towns was, and still remains in part, undeveloped. Once farm land, this was bought by Henry Ford for his estate, Fair Lane and the Ford Motor Company World Headquarters. Later developments in this corridor were the Ford airport (later converted to the Dearborn Proving Grounds), other Ford administrative and development facilities, the Henry Ford Village and Museum, the Henry Ford Centennial Library, Fairlane Town Center and the Dearborn Civic Center. As of 2005 some of the land remains open. It is planted with sunflowers and often with Henry Ford's favorite soybeans. The crops are never harvested.

Dearborn is located in the Midwestern United States (or Midwest) which refers to the north-central states of the United States of America, specifically Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Both the geographic center of the contiguous U.S. and the population center of the U.S. are in the Midwest. Chicago is the largest city in the region, followed by Detroit and Indianapolis. Other cities in the region include: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Des Moines, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Omaha, St. Louis, Toledo and Wichita. Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in the region having been founded in 1668--more than 30 years before Detroit, over 120 years prior to Cleveland, and more than 160 years prior to Chicago. The combination of industry and cultures, Jazz, Blues, and Rock and Roll, led to an outpouring of musical creativity in the 20th century in the Midwest, including new music like the Motown Sound and techno from Detroit and house music & the blues from Chicago. Rock and Roll music was first identified as a new genre by a Cleveland radio DJ, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is now located in Cleveland. See also Music of the Midwest/Motown, Detroit, 70s Soul Music, Ohio Players, Kool and The Gang, and Dayton. Today the population of the Midwest is 65,971,974, or 22.2% of the total population of the United States.
