East Angus is one of fourteen municipalities in southeastern Quebec in the Estrie region. The first inhabitants of the region were the Abenaki Indians, many of the towns, lakes and rivers are named after them. The Abenaki were on the French side during the French and Indian Wars. The area was part of New France until 1763, the Treaty of Paris granted the region to the British. After the American Revolution, United Empire Loyalists, who fled the revolution to stay loyal to the British Crown settled in the Eastern Townships. |
