Every July,
Elko is host to
the National Basque Festival. The Basque
people are a rich
culture that has roots deep in the Elko community. The "
Basco Fiasco" as it is humorously referred to, is a
celebration on traditional Basque culture and its
ties to the Elko community. The festival includes
strong man competitions, a running from the
bulls, traditional food and wine, and Basque Dancing.
Elko is
home to a number of
casinos, including Stockmen's, the
Commercial, the
High Desert Casino, the
Red Lion, and the Gold
Country Motor Inn.
Elko is also
home to legal prostituion and contains five active brothels (
Mona Lisa, Inez's,
Mona's Ranch, Sharon's Brothel &
Bar and Sue's
Fantasy Club). Under
Nevada law, any county with a population of less than 400,000 is allowed to license brothels if it so chooses.

Nicole Scherzinger admits she has sacrificed relationships for her career.
The Pussycat Dolls singer revealed her primary focus has always been music, and her busy work schedule means she finds it hard to maintain a love life.
Nicole Scherzinger said: "I have had to make sacrifices for my career and I would say those have mostly been in my relationships. I am working on so many different projects, it is difficult to maintain a relationship."
However, Nicole has no plans to slow down in the future.
The singer has just completed work on her solo album 'Her Name is Nicole' and hopes to one day become a worldwide icon.
Nicole Scherzinger said: "It would be great to be Madonna meets Cher meets Janet Jackson."
Not content with only being known as a singer, Nicole is also keen to break into the movie business and would love to star in a comedy.
she added to Britain's Hello! magazine: "I would really love to do a romantic comedy, or maybe a comedy - Will Ferrell, Ali G., Adam Sadler, all these guys make me laugh out loud and I'd like to be part of something like that."

Lewis Hamilton has splashed out on a luxury Caribbean break with new girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger.
Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton flew out to Grenada after the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, where the Pussycat Doll watched the Formula 1 star race to victory.
'Things are certainly getting serious between them,' says a source.
'Whisking her away like that shows he really means business.
'He is really pushing the boat out for Nicole. They are on a short break before he heads to his next race in Montreal,' the insider tells the Daily Mirror.
For the £50k trip Lewis, 23, and Nicole, 29, are believed to have taken a private plane, complete with an unlimited supply of champagne, from Nice on the French Riviera to island of Grenada.
The couple are holidaying on a private estate.
Nicole Scherzinger was born on June 29 in Honolulu, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. While attending a performing arts high school, she won the Coca-Cola Classic Talent Contest and performed in many plays at The Actors Theatre of Louisville. She then furthered her studies majoring in theater arts at Wright State University before entering the premiere season of the WB's television show, Popstars where she earned a role of lead vocalist in the female pop group "Eden's Crush.
