Garfield Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio with a population of 35,000 residents. Garfield's total area is about 7.3 square miles. The city is a suburb of Cleveland and about 11 miles southeast of Cleveland's downtown. With the John Glenn Freeway cutting thru the city, residents can be in downtown Cleveland within minutes. Marymount Hospital is the city's largest employer with 1200 employees. Thats more than the city, school and dept. of transportation put togeather. Garfield has a Mayor-Council form of government. This city is a heavily Democratic area with a steady foundation. People here must be content with how the city is progressing, as the city has had the same Mayor since 1983, same Police Chief since 1992 and same Fire Chief since 1988. This is a rarity in American politics. Garfield's schools were named a BEST district in 1996. Construction of a 750 seat preforming arts center for junior and high scool kids will be done in 2008. Garfield is a predominately Roman Catholic area with 75% of the residency vs 25% Protestant. Many of the city's ethnics include Poles, Slovencs, Italians, African-Americans and Irish. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is within a mile of town, the parks trees have a wide variety of color in the fall. There are many hiking and biking trails along with great fishing and boating. |
