Hamilton was first named Fairfield in 1794, but took the name Fort Hamilton. Fort Hamilton was a army post established by General Arthur St. Clair and named for Alexander Hamilton. Right after completion of the fort St. Clair and General Richard Butler led soldiers north into battle against the Indians. Butler was killed during the fight. James McBride then became a leading statesman and was also known as "The Father of Hamilton." Hamilton was incorporated in 1810, but lost its status in 1815, by not holding elections. The city was reincorporated in 1827 with Rossville, a community across the Miami River in St. Clair Township but the two cities severed thier connection in 1831, only to rejoin in 1854. Hamilton became a city in 1857. In 1867, Hamilton withdrew from the townships of Fairfield and St. Clair. to form a paper township. In 1913 Hamilton was one of the cities severly impacted by the Great Dayton Flood. Hamilton became known as "Little Chicago" in the 1920's as many of Chicago's gangsters had their second home here. John Dillinger had a home here. Iron works, paper goods and manufacturing thrived in Hamilton in the early to mid 1900's due to the migration of skilled German immigrants and the presence of ample water supplies, the Great Miami River, Miami Aquafier and the Miami Erie Canal system. During WWII much of the military supplies were built here, such as tank turrents, ship and submarine engines and manny stamped and plated parts. During the war the entire city was off limits to all military personnel, due to the large number of gambling and prostitution establishments, Madame Freeze's was the queen of prostitution locations at the time.
