Description |

Where Queen Elizabeth the first was told she was Queen (Hatfield House) Literally minutes outside London a short jouney up the A1 you will find Hatfield. The town is split in two the Old and The new.. Built shortly after the war the Famous British Aero Space Plant(Now Disused) The aircraft factory built Planes including The Comet,Trident and Mosquito before it closed in the early 1990's Hatfields disused Aerodrome has been used for the filming of hit film Saving Private Ryan staring Tom Hanks and was the location for the filming on Tom Hanks and Steven Spielbergs Band Of Brothers, which involved the building a small european war torn town on the old airfield, Hatfield Forest is Unique in that it has survived intact with written records over the last 9 centuries, not only by Kings, but Landowners.Tenants and Peasants. The Forest was Mentioned in the Doomsday Bookof 1086. It belonged to King Harold passing to William the Conqueror after his defeat at the battle of Hastings. It is probable that Henry l created Hatfield Forest as a royal hunting forest in around 1100ad and introduced fallow deer to the land. Hatfield Palace and House. The old Palace was built in 1485 is one of the foremost examples of medieval brickwook in the country. It was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth l.who held her first council of state in the banqueting hall in 1558,in 1607 King Jamesl exchanged it for Theobalds, the house of Robert Cecil, ist Earl of Salisbury. Robert Cecil demolished three three quarters of the original palace and built the new House. Hatfield is most associated with Elizabeth who spent much of her childhood happily at Hatfield in company with her young brother Edward and sharing his education. After Henry Vlll's death,Elizabeth life became troubled and during the reign of her sister Mary, Elizabeth found herself virtually a prisonor. In 1558 Mary Died.Seated under a Oak Tree in the park, Elizabeth was reading when the news of her accession was brought to her.Her first act was to send for William Cecil, aftewrwards Lord Burghly(1520-1598).Elizabeth appointed him principal secretary; He remained her chief minister for the rest of his life. |
