The Mayor of Hertford is chosen each year by fellow town councillors, and formally installed to the office at the 'Mayor Making' ceremony in May. The Mayor represents the town at civic occasions, as well as at events held by the town's schools, clubs and charitable organisations.
Each year the Mayor chooses a number of charities and raises money for them during the Mayoral year. Councillor Radford has chosen The Ron Pickering Memorial Fund and The British Legion as his charities for 2007/8.
The Mayor of Hertford is happy to support and promote local events such as award evenings, arts exhibitions, local business promotions or community events. Hertford Description
The town retains very much a country-town feel,[citation needed] despite lying only 19.2 miles (30.9 km) north of CentralLondon. This is aided by a lack of large chain stores in the town, which is too small to support them, and by its proximity to larger towns such as Harlow, Bishop\'s Stortford and Stevenage where modern development has been focused. The town is beset by traffic despite the existence of the 1960s bypass called Gascoyne Way. The town centre is still a labyrinth of medieval streets with many timber-framed buildings hidden under later frontages, particularly in St AndrewStreet.
