Lahore (Urdu: لاہور, Punjabi: لہور, pronounced [la.hor]) is the capital of the province of Punjab and is the second largest city in Pakistan after Karachi.
Lahore is one of the Pakistan's most interesting city, the cultural, intellectual and artistic center of the nation. Its faded elegance, busy streets and bazaars, and wide variety of Islamic and British architecture make it a city full of atmosphere, contrast and surprise. Being the center of cultural and literary activities it may rightly be called the cultural capital of Pakistan. The warm and receptive people of Lahore are known for their traditional hospitality. Since Independence in 1947, Lahore has expanded rapidly as the capital of Punjab. It is the second largest city in the country and an important industrial center It has been known by many names to people of Pakistan. It is known as the Gardens of the Mughals or City of Gardens because of the heritage of the Mughal Empire. Due of large number of universities, it is also known as City of Colleges. In popular culture, Lahore is known as the Heart of Pakistan. It is located near the Ravi River and Wagah, close to the Pakistan-India border.
Mid-2006 government estimates now put the population at about 10 million.[1] This makes Lahore the second largest city in Pakistan (after Karachi), the fifth largest city in South Asia and the 23rd largest city in the world.
These buildings are all under construction and will be constructed before 2012.

PML-N, APDM push Sindh to take part in Long March

KARACHI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and APDM parties have started making plans to mobilise maximum participation from Sindh for the proposed long march of lawyers scheduled for June 10.
“People from Karachi and Quetta shall gather at Sukkur on June 9 and reach Lahore to join the long march,” Ali Hassan Chandio, vice chairman of the Sindh Progressive Party, told Daily Times on Tuesday. Chandio’s party is a component of the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) that earlier decided to completely support the movement for the reinstatement of the deposed judges.
The supporters of APDM parties from Balochistan and from all over Sindh would reach Sukkur first and then their caravan would head to Lahore.
The Sindh Progressive Party’s central committee will meet on June 8 to make its plans.
Rasool Bux Palijo, chief of the Awami Tahreek, said that his party too would join the long march. His party is also part of the APDM. “You know that I am a lawyer of the Supreme Court and I had backed the deposed judges when the movement had not even started,” he recalled.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s acting provincial president Salim Zia has called a meeting of the PML-N at Sindh Muslim League House on Wednesday. He said the participants would make the arrangements for the PML’s participation. “We want all the parties who have their presence in Sindh to join this national struggle for the sake of a just national cause,” said Sardar Abdul Rahim, PML-N’s additional information secretary. He personally believes that some parties would not join the long march but he insisted that the PML-N would contact all of them so that Sindh’s participation should be noted in the Punjab.
Though he did not identify the parties by name, it is understood that he was referring to the PPP, ANP and the MQM, that are partners in Sindh’s ruling coalition. The PML-N still considers itself part of the ruling coalition at the Centre where its ministers have resigned in protest that the Murree Declaration was not implemented.
The Murree Declaration was signed by the PPP and PML-N’s chiefs. They pledged to reinstate the judges by April 30 and mutually extended the date by May 12 but the deadline expired without any action being taken. |
