The Inhabitants of Wethersfield were out in there fields preparing for the spring planting, men, women and children. The day was pleasant and warm everything promised well for a good season of crops, when with out warning the Pequot warriors appeared in war paint, shouting there terrifying, blood curdling war whoops. The result of the Wethersfield Massacre, 6 men dead, 3 women dead, 20 cows dead, and the capture of two girls the oldest being 16, all the out lying homes were burned they drove out all the living live stock. The men who died there skulls were bashed in with a tomahawk and the woman were brutally murdered.
After finishing there bloody task the Pequot Warriors sailed down the river in great glee, and when they passed Major JOHN MASON's fort, they waived the clothing of the victims they had Murdered, to attract the attention of the soldiers. Major John Mason realized that the Indians were on the war path. Reports of the Massacre in which the Pequot warriors tortured there victims were continually coming in from all sides, they had tortured and insulted there captives in a barbaric manor. At the torture post of the Pequot warriors victims, they cut large gashes in there flesh, then poured live embers and coals into the wounds, and when the poor suffers cried out in there last agonies to "their redeemer ", the savages would shout and dance in glee. These acts by the savages created a fear and enraged the colonies into a desire for vengeance.
A rash old man ignoring Major JOHN MASON's warning of the Pequot warriors rage, went to harvest hay on one of the river islands where he was captured by the Pequot warriors and was roasted alive.
Six men sent to gather crops were warned before leaving that they were not to hunt, take any risk, or leave the place to where they were directed. When they saw a flock of ducks nearby, they ventured far enough to get with in firing distance. Immediately a large band of Pequot's rushed out and captured three of the whites, two of whom they ripped their body's up from the bottom of their belly up to their throats hanging the halves on trees, while the third, old Mr. Mitchell, was taken away and later roasted alive.
