MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - The town of Mt. Pleasant is one of the most desirable places in which to live, but it's also very expensive, with the average home price around $490,000. That makes it very difficult for people who work here to afford to live here.
"It's a little discouraging. Actually I would love to live in the town that I work, and unfortunately, it's not possible for public servants to live in the town that they work," Mt. Pleasant firefighter Eddie Genthert said.
There may be help on the way for him and other working class folks who want to buy a house in Mt. Pleasant. Tuesday night, Town Council will give first reading to the "Workforce Housing" Ordinance. Under the ordinance, a developer would be allowed to build more homes on his land if he makes 30 percent of the homes available to working class families. Mt. Pleasant town officials say it's a win-win situation.
To qualify for a home under the Workforce Housing program, a family of four's annual income cannot exceed $70,000. The maximum sales price under that income would be $252,000.
"If we want the workers to be able to stay and live in Mt. Pleasant and be part of the community, we need to provide them a place to live," Planning Chief Christiane Farrell said.
Workers that include the nearly 100 police officers who don't live in the town.
"Obviously, anybody in public service, you have to put duty and sense of service ahead of the paycheck, but it would also be nice to live in the town you serve, especially a town like Mt. Pleasant," Officer Ben Ballenger said.
The "Workforce Housing" plan also allows for rental housing. To qualify, a family of four's income cannot exceed $46,700. Town Council will give first reading tonight. If the plan passes, final approval will be given next month.
Town council had the first reading of the ordinance Tuesday night, which passed unanimously. The second reading will not be until October
