Sault Sainte Marie Description |
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is the oldest city in the Mid-Western States of America. The City of Sault Ste. Marie is a beautiful city with a great and storied history. Sault Ste. Marie is America's third oldest city, founded in 1668. We are located on the St. Mary's River which is home to the Soo Locks, the busiest in the world. The city is proud of her historic treasures, such as the Museum Ship Valley Camp, Fort Brady, and several historic churches. This past ten years have seen a real growth in our community with: the initiation of our Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) and street re-building program with overall cost $35 million, the U.S. Coast Guard residential subdivision, the completion of the Downtown Streetscape Project, the construction of Avery Square (a retail office and senior housing complex), the Sault Tribe Kewadin Casino and Health Facilities, the construction of our Air Industrial Park and a new passenger terminal, and the emergence of several successful industrial manufacturers. . All these examples showcase the city's pride as a great place to live, work, and play. In addition, the Soo is home to Lake Superior State University's Division I Ice Hockey Program and the Sault Tribe's Junior A Kewadin Indians.

Message from the Mayor of Sault Sainte Marie |
Sault Ste. Marie is located in the Midwestern United States (or Midwest) which refers to the north-central states of the United States of America, specifically Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Both the geographic center of the contiguous U.S. and the population center of the U.S. are in the Midwest. Chicago is the largest city in the region, followed by Detroit and Indianapolis. Other cities in the region include: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Des Moines, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Omaha, St. Louis, Toledo and Wichita. Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in the region having been founded in 1668--more than 30 years before Detroit, over 120 years prior to Cleveland, and more than 160 years prior to Chicago. The combination of industry and cultures, Jazz, Blues, and Rock and Roll, led to an outpouring of musical creativity in the 20th century in the Midwest, including new music like the Motown Sound and techno from Detroit and house music & the blues from Chicago. Rock and Roll music was first identified as a new genre by a Cleveland radio DJ, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is now located in Cleveland. See also Music of the Midwest/Motown, Detroit, 70s Soul Music, Ohio Players, Kool and The Gang, and Dayton. Today the population of the Midwest is 65,971,974, or 22.2% of the total population of the United States.
