Barney's files for Chap. 11. (bankruptcy)

Apparel retailer Barney's Inc filed for Chap. 11 bankruptcy protection on Jan 10, 1996. According to Isetan of America, the landlord for Barney's three flagship stores, the retailer had not paid about $4 million in rent due for January. Barney's, in its court petitions, claimed to have liabilities of $361.4 million and assets of $385.1 million. The documents named Chemical Bank as the firm's largest unsecured creditor.
NEW YORK (FNS) -- Barney's Inc., faced with the possibility that the landlord of its three flagship stores would begin foreclosure proceedings Thursday morning, filed for Chapter 11 protection late Wednesday night.
