Tackling autism online: Baltimore scientists are testing a national patient registry in the hope that it will enhance research.

Apr. 2--Scientists at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore are hoping that cyberspace can create a research haven to better understand autism with the first interactive registry for patients under age 18.

Families who complete an extensive questionnaire about their autistic children will also have an opportunity to be matched to experimental studies near their homes. In a pilot study to determine whether such a novel registry would work, Drs. Paul and Kiely Law at the institute recruited 800 families and had them fill out family profiles, including medical and developmental information on their autistic child or children.
