What becomes a legend? Almost anything, it seems

There are so many legends around these days. I read about them
all the time. But what is a legend? Who, or what, is legendary? I
have been paying attention, but the only conclusion I've come to is
that the words legend and legendary are being forced to work
overtime.
From what I've seen lately, the words legend and legendary have
acquired new meanings. Or maybe they've passed beyond meaning into
meaninglessness. The dictionary tells me that a legend can be a) an
unverified popular story handed down from earlier times; b) a body
or
collection of such stories; c) a romanticized or popularized myth of
modern times. It can also be a person who achieves legendary fame.
