Fort St. Angelo The Maltese Islands should have been relegated to the footnotes of history, yet, ever since the archipelago was first colonized thousands of years ago, they have never been far from the center of events and have often played a crucial role in the making of history. Their strategic situation in the center of the Mediterranean Sea makes Malta a valuable military position that was coveted by many. The written history of Malta began well before the Christian era. Once part of the Roman Empire, it was seized and controlled by many factions over the centuries, including Napoleon. In 1814, it became a British colony. That British control ended in 1964, as Malta gained its independence.
With its natural harbours, Inner Harbour has witnessed its fair share of battles which explains the fortress like cities. The Sengleabastions, Fort St. Angelo and Fort St. Elmo are some favorite tourist attractions around Inner Harbour.
