Kathmandu

Welcome to the mysterious land of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. For centuries this magical land and in the 1970's brought a whole new wave of of vistors looking for inspiration in this magnificent region. Bob Seager and Cat Stevens recorded hits labeled Katmandu and latter Tantra, Fito Paez and host of others laid tribute to this land.

One of the first thoughts associated with the region is mountains and Mt Everest in particular, and in the capital of a country whose elevation stretches from 200 to 29,000 feet this image is appropriate. 

Over 1.2 million people call Kathmandu their home and it is the most populated District of Nepal, Kathmandu City and Kirtipur holding the lions share of it population.

The Kathmandu valley has been listed as Unesco Heritage site due to the seven monuments located here. 
The Hindu Temples Pashupati and Changu Narayan
The Buddhist Stupas Swayambhu and Bauddhanath
The Durbar squares of Kathmandu City (Hanuman Dhoka) Patan and Bhaktapur. 



In the more recent times a wave of civil unrested and fighting has erupted in the area. On May 28th Nepal became a Republic and almost a month latter on July 23rd 2008 Ram Baran became the new republics first President. Lying between India and China and the Tibetans, new rupublic status and other world wide drama the future of this historic land is in for a change.

 

The capital of Nepal is the largest of the Nepal's 75 districts.
