Liège Description |
|
Liège (pronounced [ljɛːʒ], Older English: Luick, Walloon: Lidje, Dutch: Luik, German: Lüttich; Latin: Leodium; until 1949, the city\'s name was written Liége, with the acute accent instead of a grave accent) is a major Walloon city and municipality in Belgium located in the province of Liège, of which it is the administrative capital. It is situated in the valley of the river Meuse (or Maas) near Belgium\'s eastern borders with the Netherlands and Germany, where the Meuse meets the Ourthe. It is in the former sillon industriel, the industrial backbone of Wallonia.
The Liège municipality includes the former communes of Angleur, Bressoux, Chênée, Glain, Grivegnée, Jupille-sur-Meuse, Rocourt, and Wandre.
the city is the principal economic and cultural centre of Wallonia. The agglomeration of the city, with a population of 476,000 inhabitants,[1] to more than 600,000 inhabitants, depending on where one would put the
boundaries, is the third largest in Belgium, after the agglomerations
of Brussels and Antwerp. Liège is also the second most populous city in Wallonia after Charleroi. [2]
