Saint Helier is the capital of Jersey and there are lots of great places to see there.
The Elizabeth Castle was named after Queen Elizabeth l by Sir Walter Rayleigh who was governor of Jersey at the time. Jersey was defended by this fortress, built on an Islet in St Aubins Bay, for 300 years from civil war to German occupation.
Liberation Square was named in 1995 to commemorate 50 years since the end of the German occupation.
There is also Jersey museum this flagship museum was voted the most outstanding tourist attraction to open in the British Isles in 1992 by the British Guild Of Travel Writers. It was also the winner of the national IBM museum of the year award 1993-94. Here you will find the real history, traditions and culture of the Island.
Saint Helier also has the central market.
The present Opera House rose from the ashes of the old Theatre royal which was destroyed by the fire in march 1899.
The Maritime Museum explores the relationship between the people of Jersey and the sea in the past and present. Learn about boat design and watch the restoration of an historic boat.
